Petzl Actik Core Headlamp Review

Sam Richards — 11 July 2019
350 lumens, multiple beam settings, and a rechargeable battery core make the Actik Core a shining light among darkness.

Let there be light! White light, 350 lumens of it.

The Petzl Actik Core headlamp can operate with a diffused beam, for tinkering around camp, and a more focused beam for illuminating the distance, plus there’s a handful of red settings. These settings all proved to be logical and easy to activate, with the one-button functionality. The focused beam was particularly strong and impressive; the batteries last two hours with this at full tilt (and seven hours on the standard beam). The headlamp was pleasantly light, but I wouldn’t mind if I could angle the beam a bit more towards my feet.

Headlamps tend to run-off single-use AAA batteries, meaning I end up paranoia-purchasing a new pack every time I head out bush. Not only is this annoying, but bad for the environment. So I was thrilled to be able to recharge the Actik Core’s special battery core through USB port. I topped up the headlamp every day while we were driving between destinations.

Other nice touches include the reflective wording on the strap, making it easier to locate, and the safety whistle – rare you’d have to use it, but gear with multiple functions helps to save weight.

Price: $90 to $125
